I totally support this nomination.

Elvis' movies had a tremendous impact on the youth in this country and also worldwide and they still do, twenty-five years after his death.

I traveled extensively during the 60's, 70's and into the 90's and I never visited a country that the name of Elvis was not recognized. His movies have played in every country in this world and even though his contributions were never recognized by the Academy, his popularity has grown worldwide.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Science (as a member, I also strongly supported his lifetime achievement awards) has recognized his contributions, both artistically and through his charitable donations.

Please consider this nomination.

Elvis changed the world! He was also a very giving human being with a great spirit. He gave so much love to his fans and gave much to charity. He is my hero and he has always felt like a part of my family. His music (especially his gospel music) has helped me through many losses in my life - and his movies have lifed me up just with his presence - he had it all and I love him!

I think Elvis should receive this honour for more than one reason.
First his music changed the world he gave Rock and Roll a wider platform and the viarety of his musical talents from rock, ballads, rythm and blues, country and love songs. Not many singers can reach that limit and even after 25 years since his death he can still command a spot at the top.
Secondly his generousity to people, charities and donating to hospitals ie teddy bears. Just trying to be honest in his life style which was demanding and full of pressures, which sadly took its toil.
In my opinion Elvis should receive the award.

I am 16 years of age, and it is unbelieveable how much i love the King of Rock and Roll! maybe i am not the biggest fan ever, but I listen to a song of his atleast once a day, and have read 3 books about the legend and I always visit his websites. I believe he should be voted for this award because everyone loves Elvis, he has done brilliant things for music and will contribute for many more years to come!

I really believe Elvis deserves this award. His contribution to our world is of unending value. Every generation was touched by this extraordinary human being, and generations to come will be also. Elvis "Lives" (an anagram of his name) truly does live up to his name, and such a benefit to humanity. The archetype of an entertainer is born in our psyches for ever.

I agree with all the previous posts. Elvis was an extraordinarily kind and giving human being, whose goal in life was to make people happy. I can think of no greater goal. He never forgot where he came from and believed in sharing his wealth with everyone around him. Even today, his millions of fans around the world carry on his charitable endeavors. No other entertainer in history has touched so many lives.

I have followed Elvis' career since I was a little girl. I agree with the above post but let us not forget all the things Elvis did for the common man, almost all of which he got no recognition for by his own wishes. He didn't do these good deeds for publicity,he did them because he truly cared about his fellow man. He was a wonderful entertainer and a great humanitarian. His contribution to music will be felt for many generations to come. he really deserves this award.

There never will be another like the King himself! He touched so many lives with his wisdom, warmth, humor, and voice. He sings the words so strongly and warm that you are totally captivated by them. He spread joy to all around and would go out of his way to cheer up others. His selfish ways reached into the hearts of all. There will truly never be another to touch the amount of lives that Elvis touched. Our lives are blessed to have had the opportunity to hear his music and feel his emotions. He should be the winner of this award.

Elvis Presley deserves this award for many reasons, including his movies. His first movies- before he entered the military- showed a real acting talent. His later movies were entertaining for various reasons, although not so much for the acting. His music was revolutionary, and touched so many people in a positive way. And, he's popular until today. I've been an Elvis fan since 1956, and continue to appreciate all he has done for our culture, and the world.

The Silver Screen
Elvis starred in 31 feature films as an actor and two theatrically released concert documentary films, all of which enjoyed financial success. For a number of years he was one of Hollywood’s top box office draws and one of its highest-paid actors. His two most critically acclaimed films, Jailhouse Rock (1957) and King Creole (1958) have become classics of their era. His movies and concert films enjoy a healthy life today in television syndication and home video sales and rentals. Some of his top-selling music came from his movies. Eleven of his movie soundtrack albums went to the top ten, and of those, four went to number one. The soundtrack for G.I. Blues (1960), was number one on the Billboard Top 100 album chart for 10 weeks and remained on the chart for 111 weeks. The album from Blue Hawaii was number one for 20 weeks and was on the chart for 79 weeks.

One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation
The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (the Jaycees) named Elvis One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 in a ceremony on January 16, 1971, one of Elvis’ proudest moments. This award has been given since 1938 and has honored men of achievement in all areas of endeavor - sports, government, science, medicine, entertainment, etc. It recognizes outstanding personal achievement and the exemplification of the opportunities available in the free enterprise system, along with patriotism, humanitarianism, and community service. (In the 1980's, eligibility was opened to women as well as men, and the award has since been presented to the year's Ten Outstanding Young Americans.)

Charitable Endeavors
Elvis Presley was famous for giving away Cadillacs, cash and jewelry, often on the spur of the moment. But, the true depth and breadth of his generosity and community involvement is not so widely known.
In 1961, Elvis gave a benefit concert at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The resulting publicity gave new life to the fund-raising effort, which had, by then, lost its momentum. The memorial opened a year later.
Audience tickets for his 1973 Aloha from Hawaii television special and its pre-broadcast rehearsal show carried no price, as each audience member was asked to pay whatever he or she could. The performances and concert merchandise sales were a benefit raising $75,000 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii.
Each year, for many years, Elvis gave $1,000 or more to each of fifty Memphis-area charities, but also continually made many other charitable donations in Memphis and around the country.
Most of Elvis’ philanthropic endeavors received no publicity at all. Throughout his adult life, for friends, for family, and for total strangers, he quietly paid hospital bills, bought homes, supported families, paid off debts, and much more.
Elvis' legacy of generosity continues through the work of the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, which is the philanthropic branch of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and the creator of the Elvis Presley Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis. The tradition of giving also continues through the work of the Elvis fan clubs worldwide, most of which are heavily involved in charitable endeavors in Elvis' memory.

I second this nomination. Twenty Six years after his death his giving spirt is still at work. He has passed this spirit on to his family, as evidence of Lisa Marie's charitable support and orginization of several charities in the Memphis area. It's amazing as an Elvis fan, having met several general people that knew him as just the guy next door, or thier old army buddy, all have the same type of response when ask about him. He was just a good person, best you'd ever want to meet, kind, and caring.

Elvis movies though most were less perfect were still a very large part of film history especially as far as young people and the music industry joining with film is concerned. That alone is a monumental and noteworthy achievement. Elvis did have some dramatic and Oscar worthy roles early on bfore the Colonel found out "his movies would make money even with numbers for titles" and refused to let Elvis do other things. Had he been able to do "A star is born" with Barbara Striesand in all likelyhood he would have gotten an Oscar for that. But again the Colonel would not allow him to take 2nd billing to anyone even Barbara. The rest is history. Elvis is an American Icon and legend that will in all probability outlive most of us. And his films are a part of that legend the Oscar should be too. As Elvis himself always said... "Thank you thank you very much" Fred Impens

He did many donations to organisations with social background in public, but much more without publicity. When he saw a need he helped. In any way. Not only with money.

The general public may feel that the majority of the movies Elvis made did not have socially redeeming qualities. However, ELVIS movies sold tickets, keeping studios afloat to make other more serious films. Elvis was a gifted performer and actor not always recognized fully for his potential and performance.
More important than this, Elvis gave back to those less fortunate. Even while making his movies and being one of the highest paid actors of Hollywood he donated thousands of dollars.
It is because of Elvis and his generousity that his fans and fan clubs of today continue to raise money and donate to hospitals, charities and children all over the world. Fans are following the example of a truely gifted man and HUMANITARIAN. Yes Elvis should be considered seriously for this award as it would be very difficult to find anyone more deserving then Elvis Presley.

ELVIS was what we all want to be...
Fantastically famous and popular,
yet utterly humble.
The ultimate sex symbol,
yet innocent and childlike.
Talented beyond words,
yet eminently quotable.
Devilishly mischievous,
yet devoutly reverent.
Wealthy enough to not care,
yet caring to a fault.

Please consider ELVIS' nomination as one of the greatest humanitarians of this age, or indeed of any age, this is an award that he richly deserves. Through his generosity and the generosity of his fans worldwide, his legacy of giving lives on and strengthens daily.

Elvis was simply he most talented and charismatic individuals of the 20th century. He was more than talented though because he was a true human being that cared more for others than for himself. He shared his wealth with family, friends, and even strangers. He gave away so much money to good causes such as the Arisona monument, the St Jude Hospital and other great causes. He did this year after year from the time he hit it big until his untimely death. He did all this with little fanfare. He truly enjoyed being able to help the less fortunate since he remembered his poor upbringing. It is no wonder that all his many fans and the EPE also continue his legacy in his honor and in his name each year. He influenced more people towards generosity than any other person I've known about in my 63 years. It is no wonder there are so many loyal fans. He was more than music, charisma, and good looks. He was a truly good and generous man. person.

Elvis Presley united the world through his unique music style and the presentation of that music. He brought together, colour, race and creed. This overspilled into the films he made, drwaing people together across the world. For this reason he deserves this award.

Elvis from a very early age thought it was better to give than recieve. As a poor boy he gave away his most prized collection of comic books. As one of worlds wealthiest entertainers he carried on that tradition and shared not only his talent but his wealth. And through his music and by his example he brought people of different races social backgrounds and Nationalities together.

Elvis films have never been given recognition by critics or the academy. One could argue that many of his songs should have been nominated for the best song and that a huge injustice was done. Year after year Elvis produced the top box office musicals and he showed not that he was a fine actor but that he had a flair for light comedy.

Some look at his film career as a failure because he didn't fullfil his promise as an actor. None the less he was a true movie star one of the most popular in his time and he showed that he was also a very capable actor in such films as; King Creole, Jailhouse Rock & Flaming Star.

Elvis was not recognised properly in his lifetime. The Awards that he recieved were mostly sales awards and were given by the people. An award for Elvis would mean acknowledging the peoples choice -none of his fans expect him to be recognised but we live in hope.

Elvis gave nearly all he had to friends, fans and people he knew needed a helping hand. It's time that his philanthropy and talent are recognized by the industry who benefited so much from his work.

Elvis Presley had tremendous impact on not only the music world, and the film community, he truly changed the world. He made over 30 films, not a one lost money, not an easy achievement. He was generous not just with his time and talent, but with his wealth and true, genuine and heartfelt emotion for his fellow human beings. Whilst Elvis was in Hollywood making all these movies some good and more often not so good, Elvis always gave himself 100% to what he had to do, and also many times when he didn't the amount of charitable work, work could be the wrong word, as Elvis just gave vast amounts of money away each year to 100's of different charities including the actors guild in Hollywood
This is one thing that is mostly forgot about when mentioning Elvis "JUST HOW MUCH HE GAVE BACK"

Eevry one of Elvis Presley's films made a lot of money. A large propotion of this money was given away by Elvis to various charities - his favourite being that for underprivileged children.

He also regularly donated money to the Motion Picture Relief Fund.

His Estate in Memphis, Tennessee, has enriched the community through tourism and jobs for nearly 50 years.

I know of no greater humanitarian in the entertainment industry than Elvis Presley.

There is only one entertainer who sang like Elvis, and that was Elvis himself.
Not one singer before or after him moved millions of people all over the world with his songs & movies.

And most of the charity he did was known to kept secret on Elvis's request.

ELVIS PRESLEY DESERVES THIS AWARD BECAUSE HE WAS THE MOST TALENTED MAN IN THE WORLD. HE WAS A GREAT HUMANITARIAN WHO ALWAYS GAVE AND NEVER TOOK. I WAS LUCKY TO MEET ELVIS AND HE ASKED ABOUT MY LIFE AND HOW MANY CHILDREN I HAD AND HE ASKED ONE OF MY SONS WHO WAS WITH ME IF I WAS A GOOD MOTHER, AND MY SON SAID YES AND ELVIS SAID I KNEW THAT AS SHE IS LIKE MY MOTHER. ELVIS ALWAYS HELPED OTHERS AND HE NEVER FORGOT YOUR NAME ONCE HE MET YOU AND MADE YOU FEEL LOVED. HE IS STILL LOVED ALL THESE YEARS SINCE GOD CALLED HIM HOME AND IS KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD BY HIS FIRST NAME. HE WAS A SINGER, WHO TRULY SANG WITH ALL HIS HEART AND SOUL AND MADE YOU FEEL GOOD. ALL OF HIS MOVIES WERE GOOD MOVIES AND HE WAS A GREAT ACTOR AND HE DESERVED AWARDS FOR THESE THINGS, YET HE NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. HE WAS A LOVING, CARING, MAN WHO BELIEVED IN GOD AND LIVED HIS LIFE WITH GOD'S TEACHINGS. HE DESERVES TO BE HONORED FOR ALL HE HAS GIVEN ALL OF US. I, HAVE GONE THROUGH MANY SERIOUS ILLNESSES AND ALL OF MY DOCTORS HAVE SAID THAT ELVIS HELPED ME HEAL. GOD GAVE US ELVIS TO BRING LOVE INTO THE WORLD AND HE DID THAT DURING HIS LIFETIME AND CONTINUES TO DO IT 26 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH. I really think Elvis deserves this award. Elvis gave so much to charity and gave so much to his family, friends and fans. He is still giving to the people of the world. After 26 years Elvis Presley remains the Entertainer of all times. I would rather have our younger generation watch his movies, listen to this songs, next the what you see now on TV and hear on the radio. Elvis not only loved people, he had love for animals. I have a lot of people and have made friends through Elvis. I don't believe I could have meet no kinder people than Elvis people. Elvis gave a lot and you can tell by the way people respond about Elvis.

I live in a very small market town in England and hold events to raise money in HIS name. My chosen charity "Hospital at Home" has benefited to the tune of over £500 this year. Elvis´ donations to charity and gifts to those less fortunate than him are documented in many books and documentaries. He wanted nothing in return. Just sharing his success with others was enough for him.

Every year at Christmas he donated tens of thousands of dollars to several organizations, helping them to help others.

He gave away money, cars, jewelry. He felt so blessed by God that he wanted to spread his fortune to even strangers. Even today, many of his fans and fan clubs, and his estate, donate thousands of dollars to charity each year, following the example set by him. Now that is amazing, isn´t it.

Elvis Presley was a beautiful, wonderful human being. I honestly think the world is a little bit better place for him having been here. And I think he should be given credit for all the wonderful things he did in his lifetime.

I have been a devoted Elvis fan since I was 14 (I'm 43) and I believe that Elvis had the potential become a great actor given the chance. In his movies prior to his induction into the army, he showed amazing depth of his talent. His post army movies were very entertaining and it showed how much true talent his was, because he was able to bring a mediocre movie to success and bring such enjoyment. It takes a true talented actor to be able to bring all of his to a film that otherwise would not have been given much notice. Elvis was a unique man who brought happiness to all the lives he touched by his songs, movies, concert and much more. Away from the public eye, he gave so much to help others less fortunate. He knew what it was like to be deprive of the necessities in life from his childhood. He knew how lucky he was to have amassed such fortune and being the generous man, he was, was always there to help those not as fortunate. It was not always publicize all the charities that benefited from his kindness. But that was the kind of man he was.. he did it for his own personal satisfaction, not to win favor with the public. PLEASE GIVE ELVIS THIS LONG AWAITED AWARD.

After reading all these nominations I must agree with them, but not one points out the fact that ELvis was the GREATEST PEACEMAKER of all time. Because of this one man alone, I have met and made friends with people world wide. Had it not been for Elvis Presley I would never have met my friends from Canada, Germany,Japan, The Netherlands, and England who I look forward to seeing each Aug in Memphis. Then there are the friends I keep in touch with in Romania and Luthuania, this is not to mention all the friends I have made from across the USA so you see Elvis was and is still the GREATEST PEACEMAKER, as every day new people come to Graceland from around the world because of him. This alone should be reason enough to give Elvis Presley "The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award". No other person can be credited with bringing so many people together and them sharing so much peace and love.

Of course Elvis should have this award!!! Who else gave so much to help people? He never forgot where he came from and what it was like to be poor. He made sure he touched as many lives as possible and did it so quietly too. He was one of the great humanitarians of our age and I'm so pleased that who he really was is written for all to see in his Meditation Gardens, on his grave. He was love personified, and continues to be to this day. It's a tribute to him that good works are still done in his name. T.C.B.

Everyone knows that Elvis Aaron Presley is and always will be the king of rock and roll. He is a cultural icon, not only for America, but for the whole world. He is the one who brings people of all walks together thru his music and incredible voice. Elvis Presley is a symbol of hard work. He taught the young generation to dear to dream and to not let the past generations to pass the prejudices on anymore. Still today he brings joy and laughers to people around the world. And if the humankind is wise, then we will se that all of us can learn many things from that man. His devotion for his audience was to strong, his generosity can never be compared to others and his love and loyalty towards the world is never ending. We can even learn many things from his mistakes. He literally ganged the world.
Not only was Elvis Presley greatest singer and entertainer, but he also was a great human and an great actor. Yes he was a great actor, not only on the screen were he mad the worst movies great just by his presents in them, but he was also a great actor of the screen. Wile he had pain and sorrow of his own Elvis would still put a smile on his face to bring joy to millions of peoples around the world.
The movies that he did may not be the best. But if you look at his acting in the movies you’ll se that he really could act, but was never given the chance to show how good he was.
I believe that Elvis Presley deserves to be honoured with this Oscar simply because as humble as he was Elvis would be very proud and honoured. And because he was and is the greatest influence in the entertainer world. After all the things he brought in to our lives and still do, this is the least we can do.

Elvis did a lot to help others who were in need of help. Oftentimes, he did not ask for publicity. He went and did it.

He helped change the face of popular music, gave many people a voice, and entertained us with his talent - whether as a recording artist, concert performer, or actor.

Elvis' many charitable and humanitarian deeds are too numerous to list entirely.

To summarize, there were over fifty charitable organizations that Elvis donated to every year in the Memphis area.

To mention a few; St.Jude Children's Research Center, LeBohneur Children's Hospital, Porter Leath Children's Home, cancer and heart disease charities, March of Dimes and countless others. Many churches and temples were also included in Elvis' charities.

In 1960 he donated President Roosevelt's yacht to Danny Thomas and it was auctioned and the money used for the St. Jude's building fund.

In 1961, at a charity concert in Hawaii, Elvis raised over $65,000 (at the time a large amount of money) that helped to complete the building of the U.S.S.Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. At the time, public interest had waned and this helped to bring interest and momentum to the project. It opened to the public in 1962.

In 1973, Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii was the first live satellite broadcast and netted over $75,00 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund. Elvis did not receive monies from this concert and he himself purchased a block of tickets to give to fans and friends.

He also supported families, paid off debts, paid for surgeries and hospital bills, gave cars and homes to needy strangers and also to friends and family. All of this was done without publicity and tax write-offs.

His legendary generosity has been perpetuated through the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. This Foundation supports many charities in the Memphis area. It's main projects are the building and yearly operation of Presley Place, a community providing rent free housing, career, financial and family management counseling to fifteen homeless families. This is provided for one year per family. It enables them to gain the skills and self-esteem to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

Because of these and many more reasons, Elvis Presley is deserving of this honor.

Elvis Presley was one of the great humanitarians to ever live. However, he did not seek out the spotlight for his giving, doing it instead behind the scenes. However, whether it was spontaneous giving such as handing someone money for food or raising funds for the USS Arizona Memorial, Elvis never turned away anyway in need. Each Christmas, too, he gave monies to over 50 separate Memphis charities for the entire course of his life. And the list goes on and on to such an extent that books have even been written attempting to detail the extent of Elvis' charitable giving. In fact, if I am not mistaken, his donation of $50,000 to the Motion Picture Relief fund at the time was the largest single donation.

After reading all the replys before this, I feel so touched and pleased that people are realizing that Elvis does deserve this award and I truly agree. I did not know a lot about Elvis, the person, until the year 2000 when I began a deep study of his life. I cannot tell you in words how this man touched me after I learned who he really was. His generosity and love for people was outstanding! I had not heard all of his music nor seen all of his movies prior to 2000. In a time of less then three years, I am just overwelmed to say the least. Since 2000, I have been to Graceland three times, met and talked with so many of his friends and band members and others that were associated with him, and I can't tell you how much they have meant to me. There is something mystical, loving, and meaningful about Elvis. I have to say that this can only be a gift from God to mankind. I cannot express enough that it is time for Elvis to recieve what is due to him. He definatly does deserve this award!

On behalf of myself and all of my 36 members of the "Beautiful Soul Of Elvis" Fan Club, we nominate Elvis Aaron Presley for The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

We truly believe than no person in the past or present is more deserving of this award than Elvis. Elvis Presley was more than just an actor, more than a singer that possessed a magnificent voice. Elvis was more than just a good looking entertainer.

What made Elvis so special and unique besides those other great qualities that he had? It was his golden heart and his beautiful soul. He loved all mankind, no matter what race or color they were. He loved God almighty and it showed through his Gospel songs and his good deeds. Elvis would rather give his right arm if he could to make someone happy. That is what he did. He tried to make everyone around him happy and he helped the poor and donated to so many charitable organizations. He visited hospitals and sick children. He made a lot of cancer children happy when he would visit. He never forgot his humble beginning.

Elvis donated and gave out gifts out of the goodness of his heart. He did not do it for publicity or for public acknowledgment and not for tax deductions. He did not do it because he wanted something in return. He just enjoyed seeing people happy. Most of his charitable work and donations went unknown for many years after his death. Until this day we can not name all of them. He was humble, sincere, generous, talented, loving and above all extremely kind. I need a page to list all of his wonderful qualities.

He touched people with his music and with his powerful presence until this day. His spirit lives on and there will never be anyone that will take his place. Elvis is truly a unique individual and deserves this award! :)

I feel Elvis should recieve this award for numerous reasons..not the least of which was his generosity toward others...He supported hundreds of charities during his life...the majority of which are still being supported by his estate today.
He was a beautiful man, an amazing entertainer...so much so that he was voted "Entertainer of the Century" for the 20th century. He loved his family, was a very loving father to his child, and always tried to make the lives of others less fortunate than himself more pleasurable for them. He knew what it was like to be born on "the wrong side of the tracks" in abject poverty, and so when he was able to give back to others, he did just that. He was not selfish
with what he had been given. He had a God given gift, and was cherished and loved by many....still is...25 yrs later...as evidenced by the 600,000 + who visit his home in Memphis each year.
And, one other thing to consider...as Charles Kuralt once said..."You never heard ANYBODY ask ELVIS WHO?
I know that everyone, whether they be family, friends, or fans would be very proud to see Elvis recieve this award.
I for one, hope this does happen.

Elvis was a very caring and generous person. he gave to many charieties and many people who needed help to pay there bills or for surgeries that they might need. the fact that he is even more famous now, after being gone for over 25 years has to say something too. his gospel music is the best that i know of. i agree with all the previous posts also. he certainly deserves this award.

Elvis deserves an oscar. He made Hollywood a lot of money. I think it was Hal Wallis that said, the only sure thing in Hollywood is an Elvis movie. Elvis wanted so much to be an accompished dramatic actor and worked so hard at it. He oftentimes had to make do with what he was given. No matter what the format, though, he gave his all to the role and the films always made money.

I know that many will say that others deserve this award. However, the impact that Elvis Presley had on the film industry was astonomical. His movies were always money makers that generated the spirit of the 60s for people of all ages. Elvis' charitable contributions also make him deserving of the award. What an awesome final tribute this would be to this great entertainer . I hope you will consider my nomination . LAine314

Elvis IS & ALWAYS WILL BE "The King of Rock & Roll".

He gave more to the human race than his music, which will live forever. He gave his time for charitable causes, Pearl Harbor Memorial, for one. He gave his jewelry, cars, homes, jobs & would have literally given the shirt off his back to someone who needed it.
He was truely a great humanitarian in all sense of the word. He is the second most loved human being in the world, behind Jesus Christ. He loved God, his Country & the human race. For all of his acts of charity be public or not, he deserves this award more than any other human being & would be so proud of it.

I am a member of one, of the hundreds of Elvis Presley Fan Clubs, across the world & we all give to charities in his name, each year. A legacy that will continue on in time. No one has brought so many wonderful people together & done more good for mankind than Elvis Presley.

I second his nomination for the Humanatarian Award.

Loving Elvis Always & Let him always be in our hearts.

Elvis was truly one of the greatest humanitarians that ever lived. He touched millions of lives with his love for people, his dedication to his fans, and through his unique music that crossed the barriers of cultures and racism decades before anyone thought that possible. Elvis is still giving today through his legacy, and new generations continue to be captured by the King. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are still given every year to worthy charties in Elvis' name carrying on a tradition that was so dear to him. Please consider this nomination in the highest form.

Elvis was a very genuine man. He cared for complete strangers. And he was one of the few celebrities who openly gave of himself to individuals who were less fortunate...and the difference is..he did not do it for recognition, he did it because he never lost his roots, or his caring heart. He is such an icon, not only for his talent, but also because of his character and generous, down-to-earth personality. He was a wonderful humanitarian...even to this day through his organization. Please consider him.

Elvis promoted equality long before the Equal Rights Movement. As with most things he was ahead of his time. He gave and enjoyed giving to others as no one I have ever know.

Excerpted from a book "Day by Day" by Peter Guaralnick and Ernst Jorgensen: In 1956

The African American Newspaper "Memphis World" reports that the
previous evening Elvis "cracked Memphis segregation laws by attending the
Fairgrounds Memphis Amusement Park on East Parkway, during what is
designated as "Colored Night".

Just one of his many activities was giving to 50 differnt charities every year. He never forgot where he came from and gave his love and his money to all who needed him.In my book he is the ultimate humanitarian.

Elvis was and always will be King of Rock and roll, but that wasn't all there was to him. I have to agree with everything that has been said about him and the reason he should get this award. He would give to people that he thought needed something and he never stopped to think what it would do for him. He gave and never expected anything in return except maybe friendship and loyalty from his friends. Elvis was a very loyal person to his friends. He gave to charities all the time, most of the time nobody even knew about it cause Elvis wasn't doing to get popularity votes, he did it because that's the kind of person he was. I think he should get this award since he didn't get one while alive, it's never to late to undo a mistake in the past. Thank you for giving me a chance to tell everyone the love I have and still have for this man.

What other entertainer stayed popular both during a long career as well as many years after their death? Who has sold more records or has more fan club members?
What other star has appealed to every age, race or country? Why is Graceland the second most visited home in the USA(after the White House)? Who else sold out every concert/show everywhere from beginning to end? The only deserving candidate is "The King" ELVIS!

I have just sat here and read all the messages that other adoring fans from around the world had to say about this amazing man Elvis Presley. It doesnt leave me a lot more to add except to say that I love Elvis with all my heart and even now after all these years I cant get enough of him. I listen to his music all the time, read books, watch his movies as though Iam seeing them for the first time, and just ask myself constantly "Why did this beautiful man have to die like he did, alone and so sick"? He gave so much to all of us, and yet we couldnt do anything to save him, If he only knew how much we all love the movies he hated making, he could have been a great actor if only he was given the chance. Elvis deserves this award because he was a wonderful human being, he should still be here with us today. I love you Elvis, and we all miss you. Elvis was a wonderful humanitarian. His generosity was phenominal. However, I don't think he felt he was doing anything exceptional by helping people singularly or collectively, but I believe he was extremely grateful to have been able to do it. I believe he'd attest to the quote, "To those who have been given much, much is expected". Just as he was honored on the music charts for pop, country, and gospel singing, I think Elvis touched everyone in his own way. He's known throughout the world by one name, Elvis. Whether you love Elvis as a humanitarian, an actor, or a singer, it wasn't about a catagory as much as it was about who the man really was, which was an exceptional human being.

Elvis was a true humanitarian which was evident in his generosity to those less fortunate than himself. Elvis never forgot his roots, and as he rose to fame and fortune, he was truly thankful for his success and didn't hesitate to share his wealth with others, and did so because he believed in it and not because he wanted recognition.
Elvis films will live on forever. His films were enjoyable, and they are the type of films that you can enjoy with the whole family without worrying about what is appropriate for children, and they had something for everyone. To this day, you can watch an Elvis film and walk away with a good feeling. Elvis' legacy will live forever.

I'm what you would call a late bloomer Elvis fan. But love him just as much as any fan out there. The name Elvis Presley conjours up so many thoughts in my mind. The humanitarian, the entertainer, father, icon, the most reachable entertainer of our time, and loved more than he knew. Although Elvis wasn't crazy about the majority of films he acted in, they have the ability to take us back to a time of innocence (in this day and age something that's needed) happy go lucky films, the boy (Elvis) always got the girl(s)! He had a tremendous feel for acting and could've been a really good actor had he been given the chance to develop. Watching an Elvis movie always gives me a good feeling lifts my spirits and are something I can watch over and over again and never tire of. He was truly a humble and ever caring human being and touched so many through his films and music career it should be praised.

Helping finish the Pearl Harbor monument in Hawaii. Giving to the Actors retirement home, helping St. Judes Hospital, and for cancer research. In January, of every new year, he annualy gave to many local and national charities. Besides this you can add gifts and donations to strangers and friends which are legendary-All for the joy of giving and helping. What better reason is there to give. He should be acknowledged.

There is no doubt many entertainers are deserving of this special award but the truth of the matter is, there is not one single entertainer the Academy can nominate who deserves it more than Elvis Presley. Whatever the criteria the Academy uses, Elvis meets and exceedes it.
TALENT? Elvis has been called, and for good reason, the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. He revolutionized an entire industry. He sold more records, worldwide, than any other artist in history. His first album was the first album in music history to sell over a million copies. He was the first to have, not just one, but four million selling singles in the same year. He made 33 movies and not a single one lost money. The Hollywood elite can critize his acting all they want but in reality "King Creole" and "Flaming Star" proves, had he been given the chance, he could have done justice to a classic film like "On the Waterfront." But, on the flip side, could Marlon Brando have made a hit out of "Clambake or Girl Happy?" I think not. Twenty six years after his death he had a number one single, two platium cd's and a hit television special. He continues to sell more records, movies and memorabilia dead than many artist sell alive.
SOCIAL & CULTURAL IMPACT? No matter what the elite like to think, no other entertainer has had as big a social impact as Elvis. In an era of extreme racial bounderies, Elvis not only opened the doors for black artist, but as B.B. King once said, "...he kicked them down!" It was Elvis who faced stubborn resistance to the musical change he presented to a segregated America. He was vilified, ridiculed, banned from certain radio stations, castigated in the press and even threatened with jail and fines for his type of music. In an age of racial injustices, it was Elvis Presley who forced white America to look and listen to a segement of the creative community it had largely ignored. It was Elvis who, in 1956, helped led the way to civil rights when he opely defied the Memphis segregation laws to attend an all black fund raiser to help black children.
It was Elvis who helped change the outdated social mores of the 1950's. In an era of repressed sexuality, where husband and wife Ricky and Lucy had to sleep in separate beds on their hit television show, it was Elvis, with his snear, his long hair, open shirts, sultry voice and sexy moves that brought sex into the open and into the homes of middle America. In a real sense it was Elvis who helped start, not only the sexual revolution, but women's lib.
In the fifties there were no Oprah, Jenny Jones or Phil Donahue for women to express their pent up emotions. And then came Elvis and suddenly girls of all ages were not afraid to express their sexual feelings. Because of Elvis the final taboo - Sex - was now out in the open. And on television! Because he so openly expressed his feelings by the way he moved, sang and dressed, Elvis opened the door for an entire generation to do the same, to realize it was fine to be who they really were, to listen to the kind of music they wanted to and associate with people of different backgrounds and color. Elvis was starting what Martin Luther King would, years later, dream about, a country where white and black would openly walk side by side. That dream started with young girls, black and white, not walking together, but screaming together over Elvis.
HUMANITARIAN? Elvis's generosity is legendary, giving millions of dollars to various charities and people, in need. When it comes to caring for others and giving back to those less fortunate, Elvis wrote the book. End of story.
Why does Elvis deserve this long overdue award? Because more than any other entertainer, and most politicians, he touched an entire generation with his excitement, his voice and his passion. He gave an entire generation a voice it had never had. He opened the door for those who could not do it for themselves. He showed us it was fine to be different, to think different, to act different, to dress different and to questions the values, morals and social restrictions others had placed upon us without our consent. Elvis Presley has always been and will always be more than just an entertainer...he was a revolution that set a generation free. Surely that is deserving of such an award. And if it is not then you might as well cancel the award.

I second this nomination for numerous reasons. Elvis Presley is a true American who rose up from the grasp of poverty to heights that he probably could not believe. His musical contributions alone are staggering. The movie industry benefitted from him. His charitable contributions both public and private are still ongoing today. Elvis gave his all in life and continues to do so today through his huge league of admirers. Is there a country where his name is not known?? I don't think so. Elvis is worldwide and his legacy is a great continuing part of a scary world. His name is a haven for many. He has lifted countless numbers of people from despair, gave reason to go on. He is the light at the end of the tunnel. His aura is tremendous and should not be disregarded or ignored any longer. Please consider Elvis Presley for this award. ~~Paula~~

I've watched the coverage of the Academy Awards as long as it's been televised, and I've watched actors receive awards for their work. Some actors never brought in enough money to pay their production costs, but won Academy Awards. Some of these "creative" movies in the late 50's and 60's were financed by someone. The truth is that some were financed by money already earned by Elvis from his so-called "B" movies. These "B" movies are selling all over the world over and over again, from VHS to now being reproduced on DVD, and "creative" movies aren't reselling at the rate the Elvis "B" movies are. Three-quarters of the world population thinks they are an Elvis fan. The joy his movies bring over and over to so many throughout the world is huge testimony to the fact that Elvis deserves an honorary Academy Award for his 31 feature and 2 concert movies.
Elvis' generosity, his charity, his kindness, his love for all people and animals, his great love of his fans, never pushing anyone away, always signing autographs for hours, sets a Hollywood example you don't see in many of the stars. Elvis had a big heart of gold and giving, please give Elvis this Golden honor he so sincerely deserves.

The latter years of his life are often used by pundits
for comedic purposes. It is unfair.

Elvis Presley was unique in the annals of entertainment history. He loved the Afro-American soul and gospel music he heard as a poor kid in Tennessee and the country music he listened to on the radio. Eventually he would become the leading exponent of that new musical mixture called "Rock and Roll."

He had the courage to perform "black" music without apology and he made it palatable to American white youth. He was more than an innovator. He was the first step in the civil rights movement that was to come in subsequent years.

Furthermore, he was sensitive to America's poor and dispossessed, whatever their ethnic origin. The story goes that once, after his fame took hold, he was shopping for a Cadillac (he loved cars) in an automobile showroom. Having closed the deal for a new model, he noticed a poor black woman staring at the cars through the showroom window. Stepping outside, he asked her, "What do you think of them?" "Oh, they are something!" she replied, then added, "But I could never afford one."

The next day, a new "Caddy" was delivered to her doorstep--compliments of the Big E.

Fame came to him in great amounts and at an early age. It was hard for him to keep up with the demands of age and a demanding public. But let us not forget the courageous Elvis who dared challenge the status quo. He was as instrumental as any social reformer or politician. And he was the very symbol of "rock and roll."

The very explanation of humanatarium describes Elvis.
He contributed to the motion picture industry more than they are aware of even though he never reached his full potential as an actor. His films are suitable for the whole family and have a flavor about them that when watching them now is a perfect time capsule for looking into a long lost generation. He was the coolest cat in the alley, all the guys wanted to be him and all the girls wanted him. It's unfair to even compare other artists with him- he is in a class all by himself. Far above any other. He had more charisma in his little finger than all the other entertainers since have in their whole bodies. He had his own unique style that is often imitated but never mastered. The greatest singer/entertainer who ever breathed and as for his generosity, his surpasses any other celebrity in history. Most of what he gave away or did for others went unmentioned or recognized. Elvis may have imulated James Dean as an actor early on and then got typecast in the Hollywood system but his humanitarian outreach was beyond any other. It was so strong it carries on nearly 30 years after his death with Presley Place in Memphis. If Elvis does not get an humanitarium award then the award has no merit and all those who recieved it before is null and void. Long live the King.

I feel Elvis deserves this award he played in so many
movies he touched a generation of young people and
things have never been the same. I remember as a teenager watching his movies and listening to his music I was so sad when he died I can tell you exactly where I was when I heard the news I was 16 years old at school and it was announced across the
whole school and all the teenage girls were crying including myself. Elvis deserves this award is a shame
he is dead which I believe his daughter Lisa Marie would gladly accept this award in honor of her father with such pride and grace. Elvis was a legend of his time he had boundaries to face obstacles to over come because the world mainly the older generation was not ready to accept his style of music they found it to be profanity, sexual, etc and we look back on that now and laugh not compared to todays standards. I demand Elvis Presley be given this award.

Elvis Presley is the "Artist Of The Century" and should definately receive this award. He is an "American Legend" and is the most famous person in the world. He was the original pioneer that started it all. HE DARED TO ROCK - 1954-2004. His music has touched our lives for half a century and will always live on forever. He was a true humanitarian who contributed to many charities in his lifetime and he never forgot his humble and poor roots from which he came from. Thats what made him so loved. He always wanted to share his wealth with others and he never thought that he was better than any one else. His true character is revealed when you listen to his gospel music. He sings them from his soul and he was the one to make gospel music mainstream. He never judged people by their race and he wished that everyone could have had the things in life that his talent had let him achieve. Elvis will never be forgotten.

According to my on-line dictionary, this is the definition of humanitarian: "One who is devoted to the promotion of human welfare and the advancement of social reforms; a philanthropist."

If Elvis didn't personify what it is to be a humanitarian, then I don't understand the definition. Elvis gave of himself, his time, and his money -- not just to "causes" but to individual people who were in need. He didn't do it for the publicity. He did it because he truly cared about people and wanted to help.

Elvis was the ultimate entertainer and continues to be revered not just in the United States but around the world. I think 2007 (the 30th anniversary of his passing) would be a fitting year for him to receive this long-overdue tribute.

Elvis' generosity was inborn. He was a generous person by nature. When his mother was alive she was quoted as saying that when Elvis was a little boy the few toys that he had would go missing. When his mother would ask where his toys were he'd say that he game them to another kid who didn't have any toys to play with.

As you can see, Elvis was a generous and compassionate human being from the time he was a little boy. His generosity was innate and stayed with him his entire life.

I whole heartedly agree with everything stated above in all of the posts by people who realize the compassion and love that was wraped up in the body and soul of Elvis Presley. He was considerate, kind and giving, never thinking of himself, often putting himself purposely in the background so others would shine, perferring not to have his name used when giving vast amounts of money to the needy. Going himself to do good deeds when he felt the need was urgent, always perferring that no one tell what he had done. He was "color blind" as he saw no difference in people, saying all of us are human beings meant to live together as one on this earth, all equal and deserving of love, understanding and to have their say, whatever it might be. Elvis Presley deserves to have this award and many others yet to come. His spirit lives on through the many millions, all over the world, who remember him, love him and follow his example in their daily lives. Long after we are gone, there will be people loving Elvis, remembering his great gifts to the Universe. Thank you for putting him up for this honor. Wanda Hill Member of www.elvislightedcandle.org

I am supporting the nomination of Elvis Presley for this humanitarian award. Most of his giving was done privately, as he would have wanted it, without publicity and fanfare. He was involved in so much giving, it is impossible to list it all here, especially since most of it was done privately. Below, however, are some charitable contributions which were noted but still just a very small, PARTIAL list of his total charitable contributions:

1956 -Benefit performance Shreveport, LA-YMCA
1957 Tupelo, Ms -Elvis Presley Park & Youth Center
1961 Ellis Auditorium-Memphis Tenn. benefit the needy.
1961 Bloch Arena -Honolulu, HI. USS Arizona Memorial
1964 Purchased Pres. Roosevelt's yacht "Potomac" and donated it to St. Jude's Hospital, Memphis.
1965 Motion Picture Relief Fund
1966 Christmas Donations totaling $165,000-charities.
1966 Distinguished Service Award Arthritis Foundation

Elvis was one of a kind. He Loved his fans and would put on a wonderful show for us. He said take care of your fans because they will take care of you.
He knew what it was like to be poor, so he was always giving something to someone. He never bragged about it or had it advertised. He gave to so many charities
and held concerts for good causes.
People who aren't fans of his always critisied him and cut him down. They didn't know of his kind Heart.

I think that Elvis Presley should be nominated for this award because he was not only the greatest entertainer of the century but he was also an humanitarian. If anyone needed something whether it be family, friend or stranger, he made sure that need was met. He did not hoard his money. Instead, he used it to help people. He was a very spiritual person and used his vocal talents to sing the most beautiful gospel songs I have ever heard. He was a wonderful, caring, friendly, extremely talented humanitarian that I have ever heard of. He donated to numerous charities and even donated the proceeds from his concert in Hawaii to the American Cancer Society. He was a very unique individual and there will never be another one like him, except maybe his daughter.

Elvis was the greatest "entertainer" of all time, not just a singer, a truly great American.

And even today almost 29 years after his death he is still bringing people together from all around the world, there isn't a single day goes by where something isn't written or said about him somewhere in the world. Only one person has been written about more than Elvis and that is Jesus Christ.

He appeals to all age groups, he changed the lives of many, was a humanitarian of the highest degree, humble and proud, he gave openly with a loving heart and he never forgot his roots.

No other deserves this nomination more than Elvis Presley. Before Elvis there was nothing or no-one to compare to him, since Elvis there has been nothing or no-one to compare to him. To change the music industry as he did and to amalgamate black and white folks together as one.

He gave so much to so many, it's about time this was acknowledged and recognised.

There was a lot of charities and individuals who's lives were made better by Elvis and the amazing fact is that a lot of these donations were not known until he passed away. That's the way he wanted it. He wanted nothing in return, just to know that he made some one happy was all that he ever needed.
Elvis is the true american dream and he never forgot where he came from. He gave of himself until the day he died and contiues to do so even after he's gone. Just think of all the money that is being raised in his name through the fan clubs around the world.
Elvis was and is a true humanitarian.

i second this because of what i experienced as a las vegas resident and elvis fan.
i saw elvis every time he was at the hilton. elvis (and his manager) would always have a souvenir booth. you would think that was their way of making a little extra money, but no.
the booth was always staffed by volunteers of a local charitable organization.
every item that was sold, every dime that was paid, was 100% contributed to the charity manning the booth.
elvis did not have to do this, but i always felt touched that elvis took it upon himself to donate locally to las vegas.
i have listened to recordings of his closing shows, and he would proudly announce how much was raised for the chosen charity during his time here. ($1000s of dollars!)
this fact is practically unknown here in las vegas, everyone concentrates on the entertainer image. but as a long time las vegan, i havent forgotten.
it's commonly known that elvis gave a lot to charity, and i think this is one special story to add to the list.
elvis' image includes one of being a humanitarian. he would be exceptionally affected to receive such a deserved award as this one.
thank you.

I have followed the career of Elvis Presley since it began...I have watched him do so much not only for the music industry but for the country as a whole. He supported more than 50 charities and it was not publicized...he helped many, many individuals who needed help and he is deserving of all the recognition he can get. He left a legacy that still supports thousands of people....he's the one....I know of no one else who should get this award

He gave without public knowledge. He believed in the Biblical "don't let the left hand know what the right hand is doing", give quitely, not publicly, The Lord knows what you are doing. If you are blessed by mankind for what you give, then that is your blessing, not The Lord's Blessing. Elvis gave so much more than what the general public knows about.

I am 100% behind the nomination of Elvis Presley for the "JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD."

It is no secret that Elvis did a lot to support a wide variety of Charities throughout his career... from the 1950's to the 1970's. There is a very large plaque (6' tall, 5' wide) on display in his Graceland mansion that was given to Elvis by 50 (I think) different combined charities to honor all of his annual contributions to each of their causes. He didn't just pick one, he gave to many. We also know he supported the late Danny Thomas and St. Judes Hospital in Memphis and the March of Dimes at the zenith of his 1950's superstardom. He also did concerts to raise relief money for victims of natural disasters.

Elvis left us much too early, but he left us with a treasure chest of great music, movies that were always enjoyable (if not Oscar worthy), and a legacy that has yet to be matched. Just look at the fact that his Graceland mansion is second only to the White House for annual visitor and was recently named an National Historic Landmark.

Please give Elvis your most sincere and careful consideration. He gave so much; let's give something back.

Thank you.

Elvis was a lot of things to a lot of people. He made musical history and his music will entertain us for life. But what Elvis really was, is that he was one of us. He never forgot his roots, his God or his fellow man. No matter how rich or how powerful he could have became he always gave away what he had. His manners were always first, his kindness and extraordinary generosity goes on in the heart of people. Because of Elvis' example to his fans many charities thrive today in the name of Elvis A. Presley. Yes, he is remembered for his Music but the reason is the Heart behind every word he sings. His spirit and Heart comes through to all that listen to him sing. It cannot be denied. Elvis was one of us and he left behind a spirit of giving and love.

I feel that if anyone deserves a humanitarian award it certainly is Elvis Aaron Presley. Yes the world knows Elvis for the beautiful music and the wonderful movies that he left behind for us to remember him by but there is so much more to Elvis than his music and movies that makes him deserving of this award. Elvis had nothing but the utmost respect for all of his fellow mankind. He had impeccable manners when speaking to people, always showing everyone the utmost respect. He had a deep love for his country and he served his country proud in the army never once asking to be treated any differently than his fellow soilders or wanting any special favors. But most important was his deep love for God and his respect for all religions which I feel is what gave him the huge and generous heart that he had. Elvis was always giving away the riches that he worked hard for and was lucky enough to be bestowed with because he knew you can't take them with you in the end and he was always grateful to God for everything that he had. Elvis always felt that it was more important to put a smile on other peoples faces which is the one thing he loved to see when he gave gifts to others. During his short time on this earth Elvis gave away houses, cars, jewelry, clothes, animals, money, you name it, he gave it away to his family, friends, fans, hundreds of charities and even to total strangers and he even would pay their hospital and doctor bills for them, pay for their weddings, funerals of their loved ones and so much more. And sometimes he would give away things and not want it to be known because alot of times he felt he didn't need to bring the attention to himself, he felt that the attention should be on others although Elvis always had attention on him at all times because so many people loved him and respected him especially his fans. But nothing made Elvis happier then to see others happy and he always wanted to be the one to make others happy and this he did. And for this I feel Elvis deserves this award for his deep generosity toward his fellow man. This I feel is what makes Elvis in my opinion, one of the greatest humanitarians to ever live and I feel that nobody will ever forget him for this deep generosity toward others and for his deep love and respect for all mankind. So Please Give This Award To Elvis Aarom Presley Because If Any Deserves This Award Elvis Certainly Does. Thank You!

Sincerely A Huge Elvis Fan,
Gigi Dixon

At the age of 10 I was listening to the hit parade and heard a song sung by Elvis Presley.Love me Tender changed my life forever.Even though I had never set eyes on Elvis I felt him through his music.Over the years I read everything ever written about this great man and one story sticks in my mind to this very day..There was a very poor lady who needed a wheel chair because she hadn't been anywhere for a very long time. A charity rang Elvis and told him of her plight..A top of the range chair was delivered and that day he and Prescilla went over to the lady's house and presented her with it.When he was leaving he put $200 on her table..It's stories like this that NEVER made front page news..If anyone is more worthy of this award,it is Elvis Presley. He gave more to the world in his short life than anyone else I know of..
May he rest in peace.

I completely agree that Elvis Presley is deserving of this award. During his lifetime Elvis gave benefit concerts that raised money toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. His 1973 Aloha from Hawaii television special raised money for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii. At Christmas, Elvis gave $1,000 to approximately 50 Memphis charities, which was a lot of money at that time. He also gave money to individuals who were in need. Even after his death, his charitable contributions continue through the work of the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, which is the philanthropic branch of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and the creator of the Elvis Presley Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis. The tradition of giving also continues through the work of the Elvis fan clubs worldwide, most of which are heavily involved in charitable endeavors in Elvis' memory.
For these reasons, and many many more, Elvis Presley should be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. It is long overdue.

Millions of Elvis fans can't be wrong, this man touched so man people all over the world and still to this day does so, but also he helped so many people along the way, the little people not just with money, there are many times he took a stand on the race issue, ie: when in Texas they didn't want his black back-up singers to preform, but not only did he make it so that they preformed he made them get special treatment, back then that was a very nobel act.

As I read what everyone had written, I could not agree more with most of it. My reasoning to back this award for ELVIS A. PRESLEY, is probably the same as most of the others, his music, not only brings back the memories of my youth, but as I listen to his Gospel music, I am filled with a peace and tranquility, because I can feel, what he is sending, love for our Lord. I believe Elvis also was a wonderful human being, he served his country, when he could have gotten out of that duty, he paid his taxes, without looking for loop holes to get out of it. He gave, not only to his fans and family, but to anyone he met and/or felt was in need, and didn't want the accolades that others seem to need. If he saw someone in the street and looked needy, it is said he would stop and make sure that person had enough to buy a meal, how much more human can you get. Elvis knew hunger, he knew poverty, he knew sadness through the death of his twin brother Jesse Garon, even though this death occured at birth, knowing all of this, he wanted to help others and make life better for them. He loved his parents and he loved his country, he was human, and may have made a few mistakes, but that also made him human, he gave from his soul, and now I think it is time to recognize the human, not the "Star" and that would be to honor this man with this award.

I strongly believe that Elvis should be awarded this award due to what he gave us in the music world, but mainly because he was such a lovin and carin person that ever came out in the entertainment world. He was soo humble and never thought that he was doin anything special. He was just doin what he loved doin that was singin and entertain us and just being a great great down to earth person. Never asked for anything and was always willin to help someone in need that needed something in their life to go a little smoother.

HE HAD SO MUCH LOVE IN HIS HEART AND HE NEVER FORGOT WHERE HE CAME FROM AND HOW POOR HE WAS AS A YOUNG BOY.
NOT TO MENTION HOW ABSOLOUTELY GORGEOUS AND SEXY HE WAS. OMG HE STILL SEND SHIVERS UP AND DOWN MY SPINE.
MY ONLY REGRET IN LIFE IS THAT I NEVER GOT TO SEE ONE OF HIS CONCERTS IN PERSON AND I WISH THAT GOD DIDNT HAVE TO TAKE HIM HOME AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE BUT EVEN THOUGH HE IS GONE HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART AND IM SURE HE IS SINGING IN HIS BEAUTIFUL MANSION IN THE SKY.
I LOVE YOU ELVIS AND ALWAYS WILL!!!!!

Wow, I don't think I can add anything more about Elvis after reading all the tributes that have been already submitted.
I grew up watching Elvis on TV back in the 50's. My mother made me change the channel!! But, that didn't make me stop from buying his records, his music was wonderful. And, I went to a bunch of his movies when I was young. All clean and feel good movies.
Little did I know just how close I would become to Elvis in later years. Years after Elvis died I met his best friend and I learned what a nice and kind person Elvis was.

I THINK ELVIS DESERVES THE HUMANITARIAN AWARD NOT ONLY BECAUSE HE WAS A KIND AND GENEROUS SOUL, BUT BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT HE HAS HAD ON NOT ONLY THE MUSIC WORLD, BUT GENERATIONS OF HIS FANS AND MUSIC LOVERS EVERYWHERE, NOT TO MENTION THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WHOSE LIVES HE TOUCHED WITH HIS KINDNESS, GENEROSITY, AND WELL MEANING TO OTHERS......I HAVE READ SO MANY WONDERFUL STORIES AND ARTICLES ABOUT THE KIND THINGS HE HAS DONE FOR HIS HIS HOMETOWN IN MEMPHIS, MY FAVORITE BEING THE OLD WOMAN WHO DESPERATELY NEEDED A WHEELCHAIR, AND HE BOUGHT THE BEST ONE MONEY COULD BUY AND GIVE IT TO HER....THERE ARE TOO MANY STORIES TO RELATE, BUT ELVIS IS PART OF OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE, AND WHEN ONE THINKS OF HIM, NOT ONLY DO THEY THINK OF HIS MUSIC, BUT THE MANY WONDERFUL THINGS HE HAS SO GRACIOUSLY AND UNSELFISHLY GIVEN TO OTHERS AND THESE MEMORIES WILL LIVE ON FOR MANY GENERATIONS!

The poor country boy , who never forgot where he came from or what it meant to have nothing. Gave his heart and soul to the world. It wasn't easy to be Elvis Presley, but he did it for us the best he knew how. He raised money for too many causes to mention including the memorial at Pearl Harbor. He was there when someone needed help for a good cause. He didn't do it for publicity or personal gain .His generosity set the standard for others to follow.

I don't know what more a human being can do to receive a humanitarian award than give his life for his fans, his music, and the love of his family. I think Elvis did that and if ever a human being paid the price for giving it was Elvis. His music, charity and respect for people are traits that every human should be proud to have - Elvis had them ALL. He gave us so much -- let's give him this! Elvis' music will live on for ever! This so so obvious when you see what EPE is still doing today in his memory -- but let's remember it was him who gave it all first. His music has certainly brought so much pleasure to my life and continues to do so. Let's give him this! I can't think of a more deserving honour for such a great humanitarian!! Miss you Elvis!

I worked with Elvis for 15 years. He is the kindest hearted, most sensual person I've known. He gave, expecting nothing in return. Much of his kindness was never made public; actually, this is the way he wanted it. Elvis is private about his most personal thoughts, but never failed to give to others, especially, in honor of their services or need, just because it might be made public.
God bless his efforts. I recommend him for this award.
Sincerely,

Sadly on Dec 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii we lost over 2000 soldiers and sailors on that black day in our history. How best than to honor our lost sailors than to build a monument to the men of the USS Arizonia. Elvis Presley was instrumental in getting the memorial built. Today thousands of visitors from around the world, visit the Arizonia yearly to pay their respects to the men of that great ship. This is only a small act of the kindness and respect Elvis had for his fellow man. The world will never forget the poor boy who touch so many lives and still does even today. This would be a fitting honor for the man and not the legend.

I believe Elvis should receive this award. Because of his kindess towards the people he had working for him, he supported several charities. He was a country boy that was so poor who made it big. My dad was a huge fan. He was such a huge fan he became a Elvis Impersonator and did it for 18 years before he found out he had stomach cancer and passed away June 13, 2005. Even the little kids are loving him and his music. He definately changed the world with his talent. It's my belief that he will live on and on in his songs. Therefore, I nominate Elvis for this award because of his true love for music and his fans and the hard work he so willingly put into his shows just to make his fans happy. Thanks, Elvis.

Although Elvis became the biggest entertainer the world has ever seen or will ever see, he remained the shy, humble country boy his mother raised him as. He didnt drink, he didnt smoke and he tried and suceeded to do as much as he could for his family and friends and complete strangers, no matter what colour or creed that person was. Many interviewees say that he had the ability to make anyone feel like a friend the moment he spoke with them and I have never read anywhere where he ever put anyone down or ever refused an autograph and it is well known that he gave millions away to charities and EPE continue on where he left off. His favourite music was gospel and when he oftened performed these spiritals on stage, they reached and touched people who would never normally be exposed to anything gospel. Everyone knows that he opened the door for black music to become universally popular but he did the same for gospel. Im not a church goer myself but people are amazed at the amount of gospel songs I know, in fact more than some people who would go to church. It is about time he got the respect and recognition for the charity work he did and just for being a person who glady gave all he had in the end because he believed God had blessed him and that he should, in his way, pass this blessing on to as many people as he could no matter what their status in life and no matter what the consequences to him.

Elvis Presley was the epitomy of charity and still is today. He has inspired people 29 years after his death. I work in a science environment and we have visiting scientist from all parts of the earth, even the most remote. There has never been one person that I have spoken to that didnt know who Elvis is and what he has done. He put his heart and soul into all that he did. He never forgot were he came from and just wanted to help people no matter who they were. He quietly paid hospital bills, bought homes, cars and the list goes on and on. As he said in many of his concerts...and I quote, " IF YOU NEVER WALKED IN THAT MANS SHOES OR SAW THINGS THROUGH HIS EYES AND STOOD AND WATCHED WITH HELPLESS HANDS WHILE THE HEART INSIDE YOU DIES, SO HELP YOUR BROTHER ALONG THE WAY NO MATTER WHERE HE STARTS FOR THE SAME GOD THAT MADE YOU MADE HIM TOO THESE MEN WITH BROKEN HEARTS."
So please give the award to elvis presley. I cant think of a more deserving person.
Thank you

There never has been and never will be a person like Elvis. My grandma loved him, I love him, my children, and yes now my grandchildren love him. My 5 year old granson can sing most of the songs, moves like him and has all the movies. His movies are a great inspiration to teens and younger. He shows fun and good. We'll probably never know anyone whose done so much for others regardless of race or age. I truly honor this man and I hope you do too.

I feel that due to the contributions to our society made by Elvis, some with his knowledge and some without, He should be entitled to this award over any other person being considered.
Further reasons why:

1.He revolutionized the music industry and set the bar for all to come after him.

2.As an American Citizen, he didn't believe in Tax Shelters for giving to charity, therefore he never recieved a tax credit for any donation he ever made.

3.He unselfishly gave his all for his legions of fans which greatly contributed to his early demise.

4.He was the perfect gentlemen throughout his career, to his peers in the entertainment industry, and also kept his political views to himself, and didn't use his emense fame to push his beliefs on the masses.

5.He has influenced the life of just about every person that has ever heard his name and his music.

6.He is the only person known throughout the entire world by his first name other than Jesus.

7.This list would take up this entire site if we had the time to tell every reason why Elvis deserved this award, so I will close by saying "Look how much more prestigious the award will be for everyone thats gets it after Elvis!"...

Elvis wasn't just someone who had a nice voice or someone who performed stunning shows - he had charisma, he had talent, he had energy on stage as no one else, and his personality behind the scenes wasn't one of the typical celebrities who may just think about money and greed. Elvis definitely deserves this award!!

Elvis deserves this prestigious award as he was a kind, generous, warm human being, not to mention the most talented man on the planet. He has left a legacy second to none and his music lives on through the wonderful Elvis artists out there, through his dedicated fanbase and those in the music industry who continue to generate his recordings. Elvis was a great humanitarian in his lifetime who would stop at nothing to help his fellow man. He is a worthy candidate for the award and, for me, there is no one else to come close!

I think Elvis should receive this award because as a human being he touched so many people in life and after his death he touches so many more people that a whole new generation is behind his music and his life styles. He was truly a humnaitarian and an exceptional person that touched all with his music and his singing and his praise for the Lord. And he loved his mama so a boy can't be all that bad when he loves his mama. Long live the King.......

The public record supporting the bestowing of a post mortem humanitarian award to Elvis Presley is exactly what that implies, a matter of public record.

From his numerous gestures in the fifties, namely in the fight against cancer and polio, or towards the building of St Jude's Hospital, all of them actually taking place prior to his drafting into the US Army or, as Ed Sullivan mentioned in his introduction to Elvis, in front of 50 million americans, on January 6 of 1957, when Presley dedicated one of his first gospel numbers, "Peace in the Valley" to the plight of those struggling for freedom in Hungary following then-recent Soviet invasion, or his unselfish gesture to give all proceed from a early 1961 benefit concert in Hawaii, to pave the way for the building of the Arizona Memorial, or his numerous Memphis charities, 50 a year for a period of 21 consecutive years which helped those less fortunate to lead a better life, Elvis Presley deserved this late recognition.

The fact that there are thousands of other stories, told by common people, confirming this incredible generosity towards his fellow man, including paying for the medical expenses or, say, even recording sessions of african american entertainers he held in great esteem, and admired, but who could not afford them, or generously showering people he both knew or did not know personally, with cars, jewelry, homes, wheelchairs, are furtehr proof of how deserving this late recongnition would be. Many of the actual people who were the subject of such generousity from Presley's part, or, as it was the case on numerous ocassions, of his love for his fellow man, no mater where they came from, can be contacted.

Some of them are famous entertainers, like his back-up group, the "Sweet Insprations" or human righs activists, like his friend Muhammed Ali. They knew Presley, and they would be honored to add their comments towards such an outstanding promise. The former can testify to one particular incident, in Houston, in february of 1970, which vividly paints how Presley operated on the real human level.

With almost 221,000 ALREADY sold tickets for his 6 back-to-back concerts at the Astrodome ( in a three day period), Presley was stunned when told by the local authorities, inmediately upon his arrival to Houston, that his back-up group, the above mentioned "Sweet Inspirations", composed as is mattaer of public record of 4 African Americans, was not welcome in the Astrodime, and that he "should drop them", or his 6 concerts would not be allowed to take place. Presley recated inmediately, saying that in fact, the opposite would happen. "itps either they and me, or no concerts, at all". the Houston authrities caved in, and the 6 shows were a smashing success, breaking all Astrodome records until he, himself, broke them again in 1974.

Elvis Presley was a reatl humanitarian, but at the real inter-personal level, and publicly. Never wanting to appear as one, a great percentage of his generous gestures were for him, and only for him to know.

For all the above reasons, I support this nomination.

Jim Burrows, from Brazil

Elvis was a man who people looked up to.

Elvis's generosity of spirit and giving of himself, is legendary. I would like to add, how many entertainer's works are still forefront, after 29 years? Elvis's great qualities were paramount to the general public's ability, to be able to learn from, and observe, the fantastic successes and the challenges, which are life's lessons, that came along the way.

Elvis was known for his charitable work, his love of his country, his love of animals, and of people. His charitable work continues, through his daughter.

Specifics are listed, as above, by other people wishing to nominate Elvis Presley.

Elvis's legacy will still live on through his children and grandchildren.

We, as the general public, should show our appreciation, through this Award.

I would like to nominate Elvis Presley for THE JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD NOMINATION.

I truly believe Elvis greatly deserves this award. His contribution to our world is beyond any words and of unending value. Every generation was touched by this extraordinary human being and generations to come will be also.

His extra extremely generosity and kindness to human kinds, especially to persons with disabilities, which no other movie stars, entertainers, famous people have yet matched him. He was extremely an unique entertainer and more unique and great humanitarian.

He also inspired and continues to inspire many of us to do the same regarding in donating lots of many for many good causes in his name.

Elvis was the most genuine, he loved to meet and chat with his fans, spend hours talking with thme, which no other stars, entertainers, famous people have.

It is high time, that he is paid with the honor of receiving this award.

There is and never will be anyone like Elvis. His charisma was like no other entertainer. Elvis was not given credit for all of his good qualities. He Brought joy, happiness to millions all over the world. He loved the human race and his fans. No matter what color they were. He was adored for his passion to help others. He never fail to fulfill someone'dream or a dying wish. To visit the sick in hospitals, laughter to US soldiers, gifted the seniors in need. his Devotion to his fans and those he loved was endless, to the very end. His love for giving and sharing had no boundaries. He gifted those who were in need because he wanted to make them happy, ease their pain. His was unselfish. Dispite his declining health; up to the very end,he still continued to spread his love, to bring happiness, gifts to those who were in need. Even after his passing, gifts were delivered to those he had made purchases for. If Elvis knew someone who needed something, a car, wheel chair, money, it didn't matter, he was always there. He never turned anyone down. His happiness was amusing, at seeing someone cry, after getting a new car, he had purchased for a needy family or paying an entire hospital bill for someone else. By far Elvis is so worthy of this award. Do the right thing, he was and still is the King, for more reasons than one. F. Williams

I am a personal "fan" of Elvis Presley....but have never been more "sure" of his heart since I recently visited his home, Graceland. What a heart for people this man had!!!! The thanks from organizations he helped filled up a wall and more.....!!! And we have recently (in the last few years) met personal friends of his that have tesitified to the help, financially and materially, that he provided to common people, most of which he never knew personally. He never lost his respect for the older generation and always "kept his word". Despite the image the world wished to portray of him, he maintained a degree of dignity and respect for people. I know he was painfully aware of the circumstances many folks faced trying to make it and I am sure he always did what he could to help make life a little easier. God Bless Elvis Presley!!!!

Elvis Presley was the epitome of the way people should treat their fellow man. He was never swayed because of race, color, or status. He was a genuine and caring man. To this day there is an undying love for him. Generation after generation will be privileged to enjoy his music, and Elvis will always be remembered for his music, but he should also be remembered for the kind, caring, giving man that he was as well. Elvis was a humanitarian long before people were acknowledged as such. He surely deserves this award. Thank you for your consideration.

I think Elvis should recieve this award for a lot of reasons... The reasons are above, but I'll explain As simple as I can...
Try to picture the world without Elvis Presley's presence...it's impossible. He did so much for all of us. He faced racial times, singing the so called "black music" Rock & Roll. He did it all. Some would think of him as some kind of messiah of the modern times, but not me. I think that he's what everyone around the globe dream of. He was poor, grown in fame and fortune, made a statement, and prove to the world that dreams, do came true. He gave us music, he gave us love, passion, but above all...he gave us hope. If it's not enough...that's fine!I was born 1 year after his death, but good thing never grow old. Good things never die. He'll live forever...no matter what...

He was simple, loving and concerned about people, and left us this wonderful heritage: his music! Someone who gave so much and didn't ask anything in return, that helped people simply because this is the right thing to do, deserves for sure to receive this award!!! Elvis lives on through his music that is still played by many people. He was the King and he deserves only the best the world has to give him.

I believe Elvis should be nominated because he was a very generous, warm and giving human being.
He didn't get a lot of fanfare when he gave, but he should be recognized for it now.
Elvis should have been recognized for it a long time ago.
Many Hollywood celebrities are generous for the cameras, and all to see. Elvis was very quiet about his generosity. I hope he will be recognized for it now.

Elvis personified what being a humanitarian is all about. I and my partner, Jim Palmer, have just finished a film about Elvis' 1956 Homecoming to perform in his hometown of Tupelo, MS. In 1956 he was 21 yrs old and the hottest thing in entertainment. He played to a crowd of 20,000 and after the two performances, turned the check over to the mayor of Tupelo to build a park for the children of East Tupelo (lower class working district where Elvis spent his first 13 years). The following year he returned to do a second concert and turned those proceeds over to the city as well to build a youth center. This early generosity at such a young age, followed Elvis throughout his entire life. He never failed to give, often anonymously, and was seldom the recipient. The very fact that he recognized the gift of giving at such a young age sets him above most of us. I think he would make an appropiate recipient of the Jean Hersholt Award.

Elvis is the king and will always be the king of :
hearts , music , laughter , style and enetertainment. Elvis was a very generous man a very loving man and he offered people his life. Elvis could have been very greedy after he became the richest man on earth , but he wasnt, instead he was the only entertainer on earth to give away money for the poor , cars for the needy and donations for churches and hospitals as well as his own rings and watches. he never turned anyone down. he always wanted to make people happy and he did. NO entertainer in the past or present could ever be generous as the king was and thats a fact.
We love you Elvis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you defenatrly deseve all the awords in this world.

He brought an infinite amount of happiness, pleasure and excitement into a lot of ordinary, workaday lives". He truly did make us all happy and he asked for nothing in return. God Bless You, Elvis.

Elvis came from humble beginnings & extreme poverty. He never forgot those days. Giving away sometimes more than he should have. How many lives did he change forever over the years, both with his music and with his generosity. How many Charity Funds still carry on today from his Estate. He grew up with a vision of becoming somebody and that he did. Elvis changed the shape and sound of music forever. His diversity in music - R&B, Rock, Country, Gospel. His range in voice. As great as these things were, his generosity in giving outwayed his receiving. Never a day goes by when Elvis's music is not heard in my home. My favourite would be How Great Thou Art. He has a way of singing and interpreting Gospel like no other singer. He helped open the ways for "black music" to be accepted, and saw no religious barriers. Elvis sincerely deserves this award for his humanitarian attitude to life and people. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to vote Elvis Presley into this position.

I agree with the above and we must never forget all the things Elvis did for the common man, almost all of which he did without recognition because that was his wish. He didn't do these good deeds for publicity,he did them because he truly cared about his fellow man. He was a wonderful entertainer and a great humanitarian. His contribution to music will be felt for many generations to come. Who else is there that has touched so many people the world over, through his talent, generosity and spirit......and continues to do so some 30 years after his death. ELVIS- one name that takes no explanation of who this man is. Most Americans (of all ages) and many others from around the world know who Elvis Presley is. Many of whom admire and love his artistry (music and movies)and the great humanitarian ways, some who respect his love for the Lord and how he expressed it in his music. I truely believe he was and is a person who continues to bring joy and entertainment to the world. Every year ther are times in television that are dedicated to this man. Even on one of our biggest prime time shows as they gave patrionage to his home and his music (American Idol). Also, there are many great performers of today that give Elvis credit as their inspiration and he is the most impersonated person in the world. I ask you where in the world do you have a city such as Memphis,Tenn. that sets aside at least two weeks out of the year to celebrate Elvis' time of birth and of his death where people from all over the world come together to pay homage to this great man. If ever there was or is anyone who deserves this award more, I could not say who it is. This comes from someone who loves and is dedicated to legend. There will never be another Elvis Presley.

Elvis came into this world with a precious gift from God, his beautiful voice. He shared that with the world. When he could help those less fortunate, he was always there. Elvis was a generous, giving and loving man. He never forgot his roots and he never ever forgot to thank God for the gift he gave him. Elvis was giving to so many charities, I don't think anyone would know even an eighth of them. I will never forget hearing the phone calls from the Colonel, year after year, making a donation on behalf of Elvis to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. Elvis will always be remembered as a man with a great talent, a religious man and a great artist and entertainer. I have been a fan of Elvis since 1956 and I love him still. He will remain in my heart forever! Elvis deserves to be recognized with the Gene Hersholt award. It is time the Academy recognizes what a talented, beautiful, gracious and humble man Elvis was. Even after his death, he still is giving to the world. Elvis fans everywhere still miss him and love him.

Elvis more than deserves the Humanitarian Award because no matter how big he became in the entertainment industry he never forgot the needs of others. When he went up on stage it wasnt a job to make money it was a time for him to make people happy and he once said make people forget there problems. He truly cared about people and it showed with his undying efforts spent listening to people, helping people, giving of his heart soul and money. Hospital bills, homes, cars, furniture, concerts to raise money and countless checks to local charities.
He has inspired people 30 years after his death to carry on and to think of others before themselves.
So please Award him with this great honor that he so truly deserves.

Elvis Presley should receive THE JEAN HERSHOLT HUMANITARIAN AWARD NOMINATION because of all the Goodness he's done towards his fellow humans. I had a auntie who was his fan and she had come from Portugal over to Brazil to look after me and my sister. I was 8 when he passed away and I only understood how much he was loved on that very day. My untie moaned him as if he was a Member of the family. Elvis became my reason to learn English. I wanted to understand his music and be able to read his biographies. His poor and religious background moved him to be the kind and generous person he was. He had said at an early stage in his career that Hollywood would not change him. He Spoke of not allowing ourselves to becoming hardened. He spoke of tragic things in life like losing his mother, though as tragic as they are they tend to make us better human-beings. On the Madison Square Garden Press Conference he said: "It's very hard to live up to one's image. The image is one thing and the human-being is another." Elvis had pleasure in being a considerate person and often spoke of having consideration for others. Elvis would get off the stage in Vegas and walk through the isles shaking hands, kissing and hugging the people in the Audience. Elvis was a real warm person in many ways. Unfortunatelly Elvis is no longer alive but he left us a very good example to follow, which was the same one that he tried to follow himself: The footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though Elvis achieved so much in his short life he was not concerned about the ritchies he could accumulate on Earth. He shared his fortune with as many people as he could and that's how his fortune made a difference, which would not have happened if it was sitting in the bank. Elvis should without delay be awarded for all the LOVE he showed towards Human Kind in many ways. His Life Story is a Great Encouragement for us all and his Memory must be kept alive.

I support this nomination wholeheartedly. Elvis Presley was a great humanitarian in that his music and persona touched the lives and hearts of millions of people throughout the world, regardless of colour or creed. He was extremely generous to charities in Memphis and never forgot the poor in his own home town. His kindness and generosity are legendary and he was always so modest about himself. It is testament to Elvis' unusual personal gifts that he is loved and remembered with such devotion almost 30 years after his death. His simplicity of spirit is a shining example of what iit is to be human, warts and all. I would love to see him honoured in this way as he deserves it for the immeasureable happiness he has brought to the people of this troubled world.

I beleive that Elvis Presley is deserving of this honor. He is one of the most underrated actors of all time and if given the opportunity I feel that he would have been of Oscar caliber. The movies that Elvis Presley starred in prove that he not only had undeniable magic on-stage but also on-screen. His movies always leave you with a surreal sense of happiness and only adds to the respect and adoration that one feels for this man. Elvis Presley was a man of many qualities and talents and his skill as an actor was only one of them, one that is deserving of this prestigious award. Elvis' great acting abilities are present in all of his movies and his dramatic abilites shine in Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Flaming Star, Follow That Dream (Courthouse scene), Change of Habit. Barbra Streisand recognized his talent by offering the starring role in A Star Is Born.
Please honor the greatest talent of all time.

I would second this nomination......Elvis Presley was such a generous person, giving donations to people and causes in Memphis throughout his lifetime.....for example St Judes Childrens Hospital.... his shows in Hawaii raised so much money for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund and the USS Arizona Memorial Fund.... he gave anonymously to people who needed help......with no fanfare or publicity .... he made so many people happy through his films and music......he loved his fans so much ..... a generous, charitable, caring man......who is still loved so much 32 years after his death.....he deserves this award so much.

Elvis Presley played a vital role in the movie business in the 50's and '60. His early movies, Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock and King Creole are fantastic movies, each delivering worldwide hits and reaching milions and milions of people. Acting wise Jailhouse Rock and King Creole are very good deliverances by Elvis. In the 60's Elvis delivered the ultimate beach movie, a genre very populair at that time, ever: Blue Hawaii. Another very good movie, showing his great comedy timing, was Viva Las Vegas with Ann Margret. His movies continued to sell and attrack a big audience but the quality of the movies tended to go downwards. Fact: the money grossed by Elvis movies was used by the studio's to pay for the movies that did win Oscars in those days. The last picture Elvis did (besides two concert movies in the 70´s) was Change Of Habbit. A good performance that dealt with the theme of apartheid and the Ghetto´s. A risque theme in those days )bearing in mind that Marten Luther King was jus shot). For that Elvis and the movie should have deserved more. For all his hard work in the movie business and the pleasure that Elvis gave to millions worldwide with his movies Elvis surely deserves an honorary Oscar.

Elvis was more than just a great entertainer. When he made his many charitable donations, it was not for the publicity. He never forgot that he came from a poor family. He wanted to help others in need. It was not known by the general public while he was alive that every year at Christmas, he would make his generous donations to 50 charities. What better way to honor a great man than to give him this award.

The wonderful comments by BB King says everythingthat needs to be said to nominate Elvis for this award.

B B King:"I liked Elvis a lot. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian and I was impressed by his sincerity," said King who toured Australia in May '97. "I thought he was honourable when he came to play The Goodwill Revue, a yearly benefit in our home town for needy black kids. When Elvis appeared he was already a big, big star," said the legendary bluesman. "Remember this was the fifties, so for a young white boy to show up at an all-black function took guts. I believe he was showing his roots. After the show, he made a point of posing for pictures with me, treating me like royalty. He'd tell people I was one of his influences."

I truly believe that Elvis should definitely win and is very deserving of this award because he was one of the world's first true humanitarians!! Webster's Dictionary defines the word humanitarian as "a person promoting human welfare and social reform" and that is exactly what Elvis was and continues to be all about. He worked so hard for everything that he accomplished, changing and transforming the world of music as we know it-- and truly felt that what he earned was meant to be shared with and to help others!! That's exactly what he did throughout his entire life!! He would use his incredibly amazing music as a message of love and how people should treat one another and always try and help each other out!! He would then turn around and live out that very message by sharing his wealth he earned through his music with whomever he could and doing whatever he needed to do to help someone out!! He is the true embodiment of the word "humanitarian!!"

Elvis deserves this award more than any person on this list. He stared in many great movies such as King Creole, Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, Wild In The Country, and many others. He never took any acting lessons like so many of the stars in Hollywood. He didn't like the movies that they put him in towards the end, but he still did them with a smile and never complained. He wanted to star in more dramatic movies and I have no doubt that he could have done anything that he put his mind too. He will live on in our memories and many generations to come thanks to his movies, his music, and the great human being that he was. He needs to be recognized for his God given talents and his generosity to all the people he knew and those he didn't know. There will never be another man like Elvis Presley. He had it all and then some. Long like the King Elvis Presley.

There is simply nobody who deserves this award more than Elvis. He was an exceptionally kind and thoughful human being who gave constantly and generously throughout his life to many different charities and individuals who needed his help. I suspect if it was ever officially measured, the percentage of his earnings that he actually gave away would be substanially high. He also neither expected nor courted any publicity for anything that he did for others. An extraordinary man who deserves to be recognised more fully for what he did for so many people.

Elvis deserves this Humanitarian award more than any other candidate. This is not, by any means, to diminish or discount the great and beautiful accomplishments of others- Elvis would never do that- this is simply because to give Elvis this award would be to show the world that a person can be a humanitarian and a human being too.
Elvis gave of himself, which is to truly give, and he asked for nothing in return. Some of his many generous acts have been listed above and the list could easily stretch onwards into the sunset; as could my personal reasons for believing that Elvis is deserving of this award. However, the best way to illustrate why Elvis Aaron Presley deserves this Humanitarian Oscar is to ask the judges to listen to 'If I Can Dream'. This song IS Elvis- it sets out his hopes, his dreams and his views about the world and it encapsulates the message he tried to send to the rest of the world, through his music, through his movies, and by the way he lived his life.
Elvis Presley inspired millions to be better human beings. This deserves recognition. Not for Elvis, because he did not give in order to receive. No, it deserves recognition in order to meet the very purpose of this award- to inspire others to be as great a humanitarian as the person who receives it.
Please give Elvis Presley the Oscar he deserves and inspire the world as a result. Thankyou.

Today when a "celebrity" gives to charity they make it known to everyone, Elvis never did that. He believed in helping his fellow man. He did so much and never did it for the attention. He did it because he could. He never asked for anything in return. I saw an interview w/Carl Perkins and he said Elvis geve him the money he made from the recording of his song Blue Suede Shoes, because Carl was in the hospital. He was so generous. The WWII memorial was so important to him as were the 100 charaties he sent checks to every Christmas. He was a loving and kind man who had a heart of gold (that went w/his voice) He deserves this more than anyone else, esp. w/the way it's done today. Most do it for the headlines and the awards not Elvis. He stands alone in this department.

Elvis was the typical American Dream, truck driver one day, millionaire performer the next. He chose to stay and support his hometown and home state, living in Memphis until the day he died. He was a proud and anonymous benefactor of numerous charities, and a wonderful friend and human being. His legacy of charity is passed on to his daughter who several years ago continues his gift-giving by creating Presley Place, a home for abused women and their children. Elvis earned a lot of money and spent a great deal of that money on other people; sometimes by giving them something they needed or wanted very badly, sometimes by donating money to charity funds and sometimes by performing on behalf of a charity fund. As his daughter Lisa Mary once said: he never said no. Elvis didn't seek publicity, he gave because he cared! That's why I think he deserves this Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award.
