NATURAL BORN KILLERS

The Almost Complete List of NBK Music
Compiled by Carlos Iturriaga,
E-mail: pawa@vtr.net

One cannot overstate the contribution that music plays to the success of Natural Born Killers. Oliver Stone employed a wide variety of different music for this film, and until now, we didn't have a complete catalog of all the music used in the film. The soundtrack album contains some of this broad mosaic, but doesn't cover it all.

A visitor to the Oliver Stone web site, Carlos Iturriaga, took on the task of poring through the director's cut release of the film to catalog all of the music used in the film ... at least, as much as he could. He spent some three months putting this list together, and I'm proud to present his entire list here as additional information for this most powerful of Oliver Stone films.

If you do come across any additional songs that Carlos may have missed, or have any comments or suggestions for Carlos, he can be reached via e-mail at pawa@vtr.net.

All the songs are in order of appearance.

1. Leonard Cohen - Waiting for the Miracle

This one is the first music heard and is included in the soundtrack, however in the soundtrack the length is more or less 4 minutes, and the real length is 6 and a half.

2. Robert Gordon - The Way I Walk

Not included in the soundtrack, it's the hard rock n roll music heard when Sonny and Earl enter the dining room.

3. L7 - Shitlist

Heavy music played when Mallory fights Sonny.

4. Dan Zanes - Moon Over Greene County

This song is played right after Mickey shoots Mabel through the kettle.

5. Edith Piaf - La Vie en Rose

Right before the intro, when Mickey and Mallory start dancing in the dining room. The version heard is not performed by Edith Piaf however.

6. Steven Jesse Bernstein - Me and Her Outside

This song is the first one heard in the Intro, when the screen displays "Natural Born Killers”. I found this song as “Part 1” however.

7. Shangri-Las - Leader of the Pack

The second song heard in the intro.

8. Patti Smith - Rock N Roll Nigger

Third song heard in the intro, this one is included in the soundtrack.

9. Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

Just as the intro finishes, Sweet Jane is heard when Mallory is talking to Mickey while he’s taking a piss.

(The music heard during the “I love Mallory” scene is composed by “tomandandy” I think, and there are no records of it.)

10. Bob Dylan - You belong to me

This song isn’t in any of Dylan’s albums, the only version available is the one in the NBK soundtrack. It is played when Mallory visits Mickey in the prison.

11. Duane Eddy - The Trembler

This is heard during the escape of Mickey, when the tornado arrives.

(The music heard when M & M kill their parents is also composed)

12. Duane Eddy - Shazam!

Right after killing their parents, when Mallory says “you’re free Kevin”, and then there’s a scene in which M & M talk in their car.

13. Cowboy Junkies - If you were the woman and I was the man

Heard during M & M’s wedding.

14. Remmy Ongala - Kipenda Roho

It’s the tropical music heard when Wayne Gale’s American Maniacs show all the fans from around the world that praise M & M.

15. Patsy Cline - Back in Baby's Arms

Heard in another car scene, when Mallory asks Mickey if he thinks she’s sexy.

16. Leonard Cohen – Waiting for the Miracle

This song is heard again when M & M start making love.

17. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Peter Gabriel – Taboo

It’s the Middle East music played when Mickey starts raping the hostage, and when Mallory is in her car driving through the city.

18. Jane's Addiction - Ted Just Admit it

Played in the gas station, when Mallory makes out with the attendant.

19. Diamanda Galas – I put a spell on you

Also heard in the Gas station, the song that is in the NBK album called “Sex is violent” is a mixture of Jane’s Addiction with Diamanda Galas.

20. A.O.S. – History Repeats Itself

Heard right after Scagnetti says “Mallory Knox, meet Jack Scagnetti”, when M & M are being chased by a cop.

21. Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have

This song is heard when they run out of gas, and they have a fight.

(After killing the Indian, there’s a nice native piece of music heard, which I haven’t been able to find.)

22. Hollywood Persuaders – Drums A Go-Go

Played during the car scene after they’re bitten by snakes, I couldn’t find a version that is not from the soundtrack.

23. Barry Adamson – On the Wrong Side of Relaxation

This one’s the scary music heard when Scagnetti is talking with the prostitute.

24. Barry Adamson – Under Wraps

Played once Scagnetti is choking the prostitute.

25. Peter Gabriel – The Heat

This music is played when we first see the Drug Zone. I found this music as “ The Rhythm of the Heat”, but it had lyrics on it, “The Heat” is probably the version without lyrics.

26. Brent Lewis – Reed my Lips

When the fat oriental man is watching American Maniacs, there’s a part in the program in which Gale says that Mallory killed his mom and dad, that’s when we hear “Reed my Lips”.

27. Patti Smith – Rock N Roll Nigger

We hear this music again when Mickey discovers that the oriental man had activated the alarm.

28. Carlos Nakai & Peter Kater – Earth

We hear this music for a very short time, it’s another native american style song, heard when Mickey runs out of the Drug Zone and for a moment we see the Indian the he had killed.

29. Carl Orff – Carmina Burana

The classic opera music played when Mickey shoots towards the cops, and when he’s later on arrested.

30. Barry Adamson – Checkpoint Charlie

The first piece of music heard after “One Year Later” is displayed.

31. Barry Adamson – The Violation of Expectation

Heard when Scagnetti tells the story about his mother being killed. In the soundtrack there’s a song called “Hungry Ants”, it’s the combination between “Checkpoint Charlie” and “The Violation of Expectation”.

32. The Specials – Ghost Town

We hear this song when McClusky says to Scagnetti “we got an army of shrinks in here that talk about schizophrenia, multiphrenia……..”. The song fades off when they enter the dining room.

33. Dr. Dre – The Day the Niggaz Took Over

This song starts right after an inmate attacks another inmate and when McClusky and his guards separate them.

34. Sergio Cervetti – The Hay Wain

I haven’t been able to find the original version of this song, I can only find the one from the soundtrack, and it appears as “Fall of the Rebel Angels”. Anyway this song is heard when Scagnetti and McClusky enter the hall of Mallory’s cell. This song is also the background music for the menu of the NBK DVD.

35. Ramsey Lewis Trio - The In Crowd

This is heard right after Mickey says “I say go for it”, when Gale and McClusky are walking by the prison.

36. Cowboy Junkies – Sweet Jane

We hear this when Mickey writes a letter to Mallory in his cell.

(There some classic background music while we see some of Gale’s footage about the M & M trial, I haven’t found it.)

37. Brent Lewis - Doom Tac A Doom

Heard when “Super Bowl Sunday” is displayed.

38. Peter Gabriel – In Doubt

I found out later on that this song is part of the “The Last Temptation of Christ” soundtrack. It is heard when Mickey’s shaving his head, right before his interrogation.

39. Sergio Cervetti – The Hay Wain

Heard when Mickey is being taken to the interrogation room.

40. Barry Adamson – On the Wrong Side of Relaxation

Heard in the interview when Mickey says “I think everybody got something in their past, some sin, some awful secret thing…”

(There’s another song that I haven’t been able to find, it is heard when Mickey explains the killing of the Indian. There’s another song of violins that I haven’t been able to find either, played when Mickey explains what “the demon” is.

41. Sergio Cervetti – The Hay Wain

Heard when Mickey explains his dream, and when he says “A moment of realization is worth a thousand prayers”

42. Diamanda Galas – Judgment Day

I found this song as “judgement day”. It is played when Scagnetti enters Mallory’s cell, it fades off the moment that he closes the door, leaving her and himself alone.

43. Marilyn Manson – Cyclops

Heard when an inmate shouts “Alright Mickey!” and the riot begins.

(There’s some distortioned electric guitar in the back when McClusky is told about the riot, I haven’t found that song.)

44. LARD – Forkboy

This song is heard when McClusky and Gale are shouting to each other, and when there’s the second riot scene, and some inmates throw a guard into a washing machine. (Ups! That is showed only in the director’s cut, sorry, hehe. It’s a very disturbing scene…)

(When Mickey is telling his joke, there’s this typical childish music going on, I don’t know the name but it’s very well known.)

45. Rage Against the Machine – Bombtrack

This is heard when Mickey starts shooting the guards in the interrogation room.

46. Rage Against the Machine – Take the Power Back

Heard once Mickey gets control of the situation, and starts telling everyone to follow him like “one big happy family”, and to take him to Mallory’s cell.

47. L7 – Shitlist

Third riot scene, when Mickey and his “happy family” are running through the chaotic corridors of the prison.

(When Scagnetti and Mallory are talking there’s the same violin music heard in Mickey’s interview.)

48. Spore – Fun

This song is heard when Mallory starts beating the S%#¡ out of Scagnetti. It ends when Scagnetti shouts “I told you I liked you” and the scene passes to a TV program.

49. Modest Mussorgsky - A Night in Bare Mountain

Fourth riot scene. Heard during the “Watch Special Report”.

50. Nine Inch Nails – A Warm Place

We hear this song when Mickey and Scagnetti end up in a “Mexican standoff”.

51. Cowboy Junkies – Sweet Jane

When M & M start kissing after a year had passed.

52. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Allah Mohammed Char Yaar

Fifth and definitely most shocking riot scene, it’s the Middle East music heard after Scagnetti is shot, when McClusky is looking at the surveillance cameras.

53. Diamanda Galas – Judgment Day

This song is also heard when McClusky is looking at the surveillance cameras, it adds some terror and insanity to “Allah Mohammed Char Yaar”. The “Allah Mohammed Char Yaar” version heard in the soundtrack is that song combined with “Judgment Day”. Also, that version is a very small part of the original “Allah Mohammed Char Yaar”, which lasts for about 11 minutes.

54. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Taboo

Heard during the shooting in the corridors of the prison, when Gale’s crew is killed. The music fades off when Owen appears.

(Now comes one of the few pieces of music that I’m actually sorry that I haven’t been able to find, it’s heard when Gale shoots 2 guards, and it fades off when M & M encounter McClusky at the end of the stairs).

55. Sergio Cervetti – The Hay Wain

Once again, we hear this music when M & M enter the green room, were they plan their escape.

56. Not Drowning, Waving – Overlay

This is the soft music heard when M & M in desperation are planning what to do.

57. Melvins – Spread Eagle Beagle

This are the drums heard when M & M start walking down the stairs and Gale shouts “My name is Wayne Gale…”

58. Leonard Cohen – Anthem

Heard when M & M are actually escaping, and when McClusky looks behind him and sees hundreds of furious inmates running towards him.

(In the woods, when Gale asks “and what’s next for the Knoxes?”, some classical music is heard)

59. Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have

We hear this after M & M kill Gale.

60. Nine Inch Nails – Burn

Heard after the “zapping” between channels, when an extended sequence of images of “Demonology” appears.

(In the Director’s Cut however, there’s another music of drums, which I haven’t been able to find.)

61. Leonard Cohen – The Future

Music heard during the credits. You might want to download the original version, since the version heard in the soundtrack is not complete. The original version lasts for about 6 minutes.
