OLIVER STONE: INTERACTIVE
EARLY WEB SITE FEEDBACK
|
I created this web site in late 1995, around the time when the internet was quickly making its way into the mainstream. I created the site initially because in my early searches on the web, I could not find any one web site dedicated to the films of Oliver Stone. So I created the site originally at Geocities, and finally did a major redesign of the site in late 2001, as well as moving it away from Geocities.
The web site remained the only major web site dedicated to a thorough study of Oliver Stone and his films, and I have so much valued the feedback I get from people taking the time to read my essays and my thoughts. I value the opinions and discussions of others so much that I even let two individuals write the essays and reviews for two of Stone's films, The Hand and Heaven and Earth. I also like to look back at all the early e-mails I got in the first days of the Oliver Stone web site, to see what people thought of my web effort. Here is a listing of some of the early raves I got for this site as a remembrance back to where it has started ... and I thank everyone for the encouragement as this site has continued ever since then. So with that, I give you the comments from some of the people who first stumbled upon my little piece of internet real estate ...
From Nick Binion in Riverside, Connecticut
Oliver Stone was my first childhood friend. Although I doubt he would remember me, I recently spotted him in a home movie pushing
my sister around in an inflatible boat in a bay of the Long Island Sound (I'm guessing he was seven or so). Oliver was someone we always
missed. Though we never saw Oliver after our earliest years of childhood, my mother once mentioned that Lou Stone (Oliver's dad) was
concerned about Oliver's finding a career...Now, few can claim to have made so many contributions to the championing of truth in the
medium of film.
From Malibu, California
I really enjoy your page on the internet. I had planned on doing my homework tonight but instead could not stop reading everything
you had on here. It was very interesting and impressive! Thanks for putting so much time into creating an awesome web page.
From Skopje, Macedonia
Excellent! Everything that a homepage should have is here. The reviews show the real spirit of Stone's movies. Americans are too afraid
to ask questions beyond what is served by the media and general opinion. Oliver Stone isn't.
From Ryan Aubin
Your page on Oliver Stone is a masterpiece, something that has been well thought out and thoroughly perfected to the point of
brilliance. Oliver is truly THE best film director ever and I thank you for providing the information that I needed. Specially noted is the
Natural Born Killers section of this page. It really brings forth the essence of the movie. The "in case you missed" notes are great!!
From RC Trussell, India Co, 3rd Batallion, 26th Marines, 1969
I came upon the Oliver Stone page via www.disinfo.com...you Sir, have done a brilliant job for the warrior, and the public. Thank you. I couldn't
go many places...the tears take over.
From Thuy T. Nguyen
Just browsing and came across your Oliver Stone page and its very cool. I just purchased Heaven and Earth, and its one
of the saddest movies I've ever seen, the reason being that my mother was that young girl seeing that war, separating from her family,
falling in love and leaving with that American soldier to the United States. Basically this was one of the best movies I will probably
ever see.
From Carmel Valley, California
Quite frankly, I'm impressed and amazed. You have created a genuine tribute to one of the greatest filmmakers and storytellers
alive. It is done with obvious affection and yet you haven't white-washed anything. Well done.
From Braunschweig, Germany
I think it is a great help for people who would like to know Stone better because it shows Stone from different sides.
From Macau
I like your home page. I am a Portuguese journalist in Macau, South China near Hong Kong. I am very interested in Oliver Stone's
work.
From Fort Worth, Texas -- Jack White, a researcher in the JFK Assassination case, well known for his work on several different
photographic elements of the case, including the Badgeman photos and the faked Oswald pictures, stopped by my page and commented...
Jason....great page, especially your new JFK page -- I noticed comments about some of my work...Badgeman, Backyard Photos, etc.
From Ohio
Oliver Stone is my single favorite director of all time. He is my inspiration and spiritual mentor. He is not infallible, but he is unabashed
and perhaps the single most courageous filmmaker of our day. Your site is exceptional, and your essays are well written. You are perhaps
too kind to The Doors but the completeness and thoughtfulness of the site leaves us with a site that is wholly professional and lovingly
crafted.
From London, England
This site is a credit to the genius of Oliver Stone.
From Colombia, South America
The Oliver Stone page is one of the best I've ever seen on the Internet. It is full of information.
From New York City, New York
It's a damn shame that most critics hate Stone so much. I think he's one of the best directors in the world and with this excellent
homepage, you are supporting somehow his career.
From Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
This page is totally cool -- browsing through it is one of my favorite pastimes. Anyways, I just thought I would leave a comment on
the page and on the movie Natural Born Killers -- it is by far the best movie ever made in Hollywood and I really hope to be seeing
Mickey and Mallory real soon in Natural Born Killers 2.
From Lillehammer, Norway
This is the greatest page in the world. Great pics and info. Keep on.
From Kansas City, Missouri
Wow...you can't possibly realize how long I've looked for a Stone site on the web.
From Singapore
I find your site a comprehensive and detailed guide to one of the most important filmmakers in the world. Your site truly deserved the recognition from Point and I hope you will continue to feature Oliver Stone's prolific work.
From Lewisville, Texas
I think it's great that you have this page. As far as choosing my favorite film, I chose his most cinematic film ever, JFK. All around I would rank Platoon number one but JFK's visuals just cannot be ignored.
From Greenbelt, Maryland
Being a fan of his work, I was pleased that there are others who appreciate him as well despite the fact he often creates films that cause controversy. I'd rather like to think that his work makes us think about the world we live in - even if it is from his point of view. But that makes his artistic integrity all the more worthwhile.
From Dallas, Texas
I think this page is great...A fantastic way to stay in touch with our generation's premier filmmaker.
From Champaign, Illinois
It's nice to see some real appraisal of Stone as a director and not just as a media spot. Too much of his noteriety in the press stems from an incomplete understanding of his work. He's usually just written off as that conspiracy loony. Natural Born Killers dealt with the media in this light but I thought it was a bit over the top. JFK, in my mind, is his ultimate film in its sublime rework of history - not as a conspiracy film on the assassination of JFK but as a way to rethink history and who writes it.
From Denmark
I've been a fan of Stone's since the time I saw Platoon and I must admit there is, in my opinion, no director that is better.
From New York, New York
I think your page is wonderful and has helped me immensely - I'm doing an article on Salvador for CREATIVE SCREENWRITING magazine whose summer issue is featuring Oliver Stone. Your web site has helped me find info for background on him and the movie. Keep up the good work.
From Harlan, Kentucky
I think it is really awesome that Oliver Stone has been honored by having his own personal home page on the Internet. In my opinion, he is the best director working today.
From Monterrey, Mexico
I think this is a great way to admire the work of the only true artist of the 90's.
From Winnipeg, Manitoba
Very interesting. I'm glad someone has taken the time to provide so much information regarding Oliver Stone. He truly is one of the best American directors of this time.
From Santo Domingo, N.D.
In my country (Dominican Republic), people consider me strange for having someone like Mr. Stone for an idol. That's what he is to me. He showed me that being different isn't a bad thing but a blessing instead. I owe him something - I decided to become a writer after seeing a Showtime special on him - Oliver Stone : Inside And Out - I owe you something too - a place to be informed about Mr. Stone.
From Toronto, Ontario
I am extremely impressed by your page. It's in depth, honest, and above all, a good read. And to all who read this - do not become a slave of the system - practice your right to think.
From Keizer, Oregon
By far, the BEST page I have seen on one of America's greatest directors. The information included on your page goes on and on. I not only enjoyed reading it all but also I know that it will help me very much on my report. Thank you and great page.
From San Diego, California
Entertaining, informative, and objective. Well conceived and easy to get around. Great page.
From Setauket, New York
Your essay on Oliver Stone is dead on. I agree completely that Stone is our greatest director. NBK is a masterpiece - a great cinematic achievement. I have seen it probably 20 times. I own every movie and continue to watch each one at least once a month. Hail to the king, Oliver Stone.
From Washington D.C.
I'm glad to read about Stone beyond the vituperation of his character and films, most particularly by those who haven't seen anything since JFK around D.C. Does make you feel there is a certain sensibility embedded in those who live inside the power structures here in D.C. - an ever changing organization made up of the many political hacks who've survived in this town since the Nixon administration which excites their psychic hackles at the mention of his name.
From Rockville, Maryland
Congratulations on putting together a page to honor Oliver Stone as our greatest director. Like you I am also a fan of Oliver's work. I am upset with the Academy Awards for not nominating Nixon for Best Picture and Oliver for Best Director. Nixon was, in my opinion, the best movie of the year and Oliver deserves the recognition for having created this classic.
From Los Angeles, California
I totally agree with you. Oliver Stone rules. I'm a graduate film student and I've been inspired by his brilliance more than once.
From Tampere, Finland, from the creator of Erkki's Home Page
I am a fan of Oliver Stone and I find your pages interesting. Actually I was searching for a cool site concerning Oliver Stone so I could add it to my list of hot links on my home page. By the way, JFK is the greatest.
From Oakland, California
I want to thank you for this great contribution to the Internet. Oliver Stone is a brilliant filmmaker and I'm impressed with your homepage. While your essay could use some proofreading, the short paragraph commentaries on each film are perfect. Anyways, keep the page running...I think it's great.
From Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Excellent. I'm a huge fan of Stone's work and any little tidbit of news on his work is of interest to me. Keep up the good work - I'll be visiting this site continuously.
From St. George, Utah
So far I've not found enough in depth detail about each movie that Stone has made. I don't really want a whole book on this board but more detail would be nice. I think the fact that there are other homepage addresses given at the end of each movie's description is great.
From El Paso, Texas
Very helpful. I am doing a research paper on Vietnam War films. Good job.
From Rochester, New York
I enjoy Oliver Stone movies, but probably not as much as you do. Thanks for the cool page.
From Norman, Oklahoma
I enjoy it very much. Stone is a director worthy of discussing in detail because his films are unique in the issues they raise and because his skills as a writer and director are so excellent. His writing is such a solid foundation for his films and his technical skill is so outstanding. That is why his films are so controversial - They are too well done.
From La Romana, Dominican Republic
What can I say - it's a great homepage. Oliver Stone is my favorite director of all times.
Other comments...
Great to see an homage to such a great artistic mind. I've worked on several Oliver Stone films: BORN, JFK, NBK, NIXON. It's great to work in the editing room on such brilliant films. It's a great study.
I was strongly considering making one of my own (an Oliver Stone web page) but it wouldn't have been remotely as well done as yours.
Great job in compiling this data.
Thank you so much for keeping such a marvelous page about Stone. It is great! Keep up the good work.
There's so much great stuff here. I'm working on a Sr. Research project on The Existentialism of Oliver Stone Films. If you have any ideas, I'd be really grateful.
I thought your page is very interesting. I am currently doing a paper on Oliver Stone and JFK. I am a Stone supporter.
I enjoyed your home page on Oliver Stone. It really gave some good detail about what type of director he is.
Thanks for starting this page. You are a f------ genius.
